Readers' Voices for July 21
Thanks to all who helped with clinic
Our affordable vaccination clinic on July 17 was a great success. Another 200 pets are now protected from the deadly distemper and parvo viruses which have hit Cumberland County animals without mercy.
Special thanks to Mr. Bobby Henley for allowing Unchain Cumberland County to use the Clinic Pharmacy parking lot for our event. Also, Becky's Cafe and Hope Mills Presbyterian Church for the use of their shade trees on that blistering hot day. Finding someone to host our life-saving programs is always the hardest part, and we are eternally grateful to those Hope Mills businesses, including Hope Mills Urgent Care & Medical Clinic for allowing UCC volunteers to use their parking lot.
We were late getting started because the medical team had an emergency that morning; we apologize for that, and sincerely thank those who waited. To everyone who bought cold drinks, snacks, T-shirts and to those who had their faces painted by our young UCC volunteers, Angela and Jackie, thank you so very, very much. Your donations will be used to ease the suffering of animals.
What we do is not easy, and it is not cheap. We need sponsors; we need community, city and county support; we need start-up funds for the N.C. State Spay and Neuter program, which is a reimbursement plan, paid for by the purchase of "I Care" license plates. We need volunteers, and the participation of every veterinarian in this county, if we are to stop the slaughter at our shelter. One thousand animals have been euthanized every month for the past 30 years. Our mission is to reduce that number by half in the next five years. It will take every one of us, working together, to reach that goal.
