The Library Corner: Take these summer blockbusters home
By Meg Smith
Hope Mills Branch Library

Beating the heat this summer may seem nearly impossible with those soaring temperatures we've been facing, but a movie date is always an appealing alternative as we struggle with these blazing forecasts.

This summer has brought interesting films based on books for all members of the family. Before savoring those buttery kernels of popcorn and enjoying the latest flick, consider reading the riveting novels which inspired these latest blockbusters. You can also place a hold on these library materials by visiting www.cumberland.lib.nc.us or seek assistance from our library staff.

"Eclipse'' by Stephanie Meyer

This latest vampire epic in the international best-selling series highlights typical teenage angst with surprising alliances and fantastic rivalries. Continue the biting drama by revisiting your favorite werewolves, vampires and those unlucky humans caught in the crossfire. For those newbies interested in sinking their teeth into these tantalizing tomes, consider Stephanie Meyer's original, "Twlight.''

"Beezus and Ramona" by Beverly Cleary

The original queen of spunk, Ramona, and her older sister Beezus have been captivating children for decades. Read about the natural tension these girls face in this irresistible series filled with humor and warmth. Enjoy the hilarious antics of the lovable Quimby family with the movie's release of "Ramona and Beezus,'' opening this Friday.

"Eat. Pray. Love: One Woman's Search for Everything across Italy, India, and Indonesia'' by Elizabeth Gilbert

Part international road trip, part foodie paradise, this touching memoir is catapulted to the silver screen by Julia Roberts. Devastated by her marriage woes, she travels the globe before she can rediscover herself. Before this movie hits theaters this August, experience this quiet story of new love and the everlasting power of hope.

"Guardians of Ga'Hoole'' series by Kathryn Lasky

These animal fantasies deliver a gentle twist on the classic battle of good versus evil. Barn owl Soren must find the courage to escape when he is kidnapped and sent to the ominous St. Aegolius Academy. This imaginative series will surely capture young readers' imaginations with this film's September release.
