Hope Mills board accepts committee appointments

The Hope Mills Board of Commissioners unanimously approved appointments to various town committees at its regular meeting Jan. 20.
It was the first year of a new policy for committee appointments. The board adopted a new volunteer policy last year that established three-year staggered terms for most town committees and limited volunteers to two consecutive terms on an individual committee.
A nominating committee considered applications for each town committee.
Connie Spell, the assistant town manager and town clerk, said the process went well, with each person who applied being placed on a committee.
There are also several vacancies still open. There is one vacant seat on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. There are also four regular seats and three alternate seats open on the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Spell said the Zoning Board of Adjustment rarely meets, as it only considers appeals from the town's Zoning Board. However, it is necessary to have the committee seats filled in case an appeal needs to be heard.
The Appearance Commission and the Zoning Board have only one-year terms as the committee membership is set by ordinance.
Commissioner Bob Gorman said he would like to see the terms for those committees changed to three-year staggered terms to match the other committees.
