Ready to go green
Hope Mills residents should receive carts for the town's new curbside recycling program this week.
Town Manager Randy Beeman said last week that Waste Management is expected to deliver the carts to residences by the end of this week. He said the company plans to deliver about 1,500 carts a day. Delievery began Monday.
Each residence, excluding apartment complexes, will receive a 65-gallon cart for recyclable materials. Beeman said the carts will be green with a yellow lid.
Acceptable items include paper products, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, aluminum products and tin or steel cans.
All items may be placed directly in the cart together and do not need to be bagged.
Items that are not recyclable include diapers, food waste, films, plastic bags, plastic wrap or foam cups and containers.
Waste Management will conduct a weekly pickup of all recyclable items each Wednesday beginning Jan. 20.
Today is one of the town's normal collection days for the plastic bottles. Beeman said residents should place their bottles in their recycling cart and place it curbside if they have received it and today is their normal pickup day.
The Board of Commissioners approved hiring Waste Management to develop a curbside recycling program for the town at its Nov. 16 meeting.
The town began a temporary recycling program for plastic bottles after a state law banning the bottles from landfills went into effect Oct. 1. The temporary program was put in place to allow commissioners time to decide whether to develop a full curbside recycling program.
